Ajodhya Hills & Upper Dam, Purulia

By admin, 24 March, 2026

Secluded in the rugged western fringe of West Bengal, the Ajodhya Hills rise like a forgotten world of ancient rock formations, dense sal forests, and tribal villages that time seems to have overlooked. At approximately 700 metres above sea level, these undulating hills offer a refreshing escape from the Bengal plains, with the Upper Dam serving as the region's serene centrepiece: a shimmering reservoir cradled by forested slopes and weathered boulders.

Unlike the crowded hill stations of Darjeeling or Sikkim, Ajodhya Hills remains blissfully off the mainstream tourist radar. This is a place for those who seek solitude, sunrise vistas that paint the sky in impossible colours, and the simple pleasure of walking through landscapes where nature still holds dominion.

Ajodhya Hills is not a single peak but a range of small hills and rocky outcrops spreading across roughly 20 square kilometres. The main attractions are concentrated around:

Upper Dam - The focal point, a scenic reservoir built across the Kangsabati River
Marble Lake - A small, picturesque lake surrounded by rock formations
Bamni Falls - A modest waterfall about 8km from the main area
Turga Falls - Another seasonal waterfall deeper into the hills

The nearest town is Baghmundi (15km), which serves as the gateway. Most visitors base themselves near Upper Dam, where basic accommodation and facilities are available.

Best Time to Visit

Best time: October to March. The post-monsoon months bring clear skies, comfortable temperatures (15-25°C), and lush greenery. Winter mornings can be pleasantly cool, perfect for sunrise viewings.

Avoid: April to June gets hot (35-40°C), though early mornings remain tolerable. The monsoon (July-September) brings heavy rainfall, making roads treacherous and many areas inaccessible, though the landscape transforms into emerald magnificence.
