Lataguri–Gorumara National Park, Jalpaiguri

By admin, 20 March, 2026

If Darjeeling is the Queen of the Hills, the Dooars is her wild, unkempt garden. Lataguri is the dusty, bustling trailhead village that serves as the gateway to Gorumara National Park. This lush stretch of riverine grasslands and sal forests along the Murti and Raidak, stitched together by the broader Jaldhaka river system, is one of West Bengal’s key one-horned rhino landscapes (second only to nearby Jaldapara). Expect roughly 60–65 rhinos (the number nudges up and down with each census and new calves), regular elephant movement, gaur (Indian bison), and a deep bird list that comfortably clears 250 recorded species.

The park's relatively compact size and excellent network of watchtowers make it more accessible than many of India's larger reserves, while its location in the Himalayan foothills provides a stunning backdrop of tea gardens and distant snow-capped peaks.

Permits: You must obtain a permit from the Nature Interpretation Centre in Lataguri. Also: A lot of the quota now gets swallowed online. If you’re travelling in peak season, check the official West Bengal forest booking portal first, and treat the counter as your Plan B, not the other way around.

Booking & ID: Whether you book online or at the counter, carry an original photo ID as the forest staff do check, and “we have a screenshot” doesn’t always fly in the field.

Cost: Prices get revised, and they vary by route/tower, but a realistic working number is roughly Rs. 4,000+ per jeep for the common circuits, with higher tariffs for certain watchtower-focused runs. Remember: entry, guide, and camera fees may be broken out separately depending on how you book.

Hours: There are usually 4 shifts. The early morning (6:00 am) and late afternoon (3.30pm) slots are prime time.

Closed day: Safari/watchtower entry is commonly suspended on Thursdays, so don’t build a one-shot itinerary that only works on a Thursday.

Tip: Queue up early. During peak season (Dec/Jan), tickets for the popular watchtowers sell out within minutes of the counter opening.

What to Bring: Binoculars, camera with telephoto lens, neutral-coloured clothing (avoid bright colours), layers for chilly mornings, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a torch.

Getting There

By train: New Mal Junction (about 23km from Lataguri) is the nearest major railway station, connected to Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, and Guwahati. New Jalpaiguri (NJP), roughly 55–60km away, offers more connections. Taxis and shared jeeps are available outside both stations.

By air: Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri (roughly 75–80km to the Lataguri/Gorumara belt, depending on the route and gate) has daily flights from Delhi, Kolkata, and other major cities. Pre-arrange a taxi (Rs. 2,000-2,500) or take a shared cab to New Jalpaiguri, then a local taxi onward.

By road: Regular buses and shared jeeps run from Siliguri to Lataguri (3 hours, Rs. 100-150). Private taxis cost more but buy you flexibility. The journey winds through tea estates and offers beautiful views.

Getting Around

Lataguri is tiny and easily walkable. The main activities involve park safaris, which are organized through forest department vehicles only. No private vehicles are allowed inside Gorumara. Think of it as a controlled funnel: you don’t “drive into Gorumara,” you join a permitted vehicle on a permitted route at a permitted hour. Most hotels and homestays can arrange safaris, or book directly at the park gates.

Where/What to Eat

Dining options are limited. This is dhaba land.

Local Secret: Ask for “Boroli Maach” (a local river fish found in the Teesta/Murti rivers). It’s fried crisp or served in a mustard gravy.

The Staple: Momos and Thukpa are available at every street corner in Lataguri market.

Drink: Dooars Tea. It’s stronger and bolder than the delicate Darjeeling brew.

Best Time to Visit

Best time: November to April offers the most pleasant weather and best wildlife viewing, with dry conditions drawing animals to water sources.

Peak season: December to February sees comfortable temperatures (15-25°C) and excellent visibility, though mornings can be chilly. Book accommodations well in advance.

Monsoon (June to September): The park closes during heavy rains when the rivers swell and grasslands flood. The region transforms into a verdant paradise but is impractical for visitors.

Shoulder season: October and May offer fewer crowds and good sightings, though May can be hot and humid.
