Tipu Sultan never set foot in Kolkata; his son, Prince Ghulam Mohammed, built this mosque in 1842 in memory of his father after the family’s exile to the city following Tipu’s death in battle in 1799. Four slender minarets and sixteen green domes rise above the market bustle of Esplanade; the mosque holds 1,000 worshippers and an inscribed verse above the entrance offers a quietly moving dedication.
