Kolkata’s Anglican cathedral, founded 1839 and completed 1847 in Gothic Revival style, echoes Norwich Cathedral but adapted for Bengal's climate: lower roofline, larger windows, a longer nave. Its tower has twice fallen to earthquakes; the current one, dedicated 1938, follows the Bell Harry Tower at Canterbury. The interior’s centrepiece is the great West window by Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, one of his rare commissions outside Britain, installed in memory of a Viceroy assassinated in the Andamans. St. Paul’s remains an active congregation, overwhelmingly Indian Christian today, layering Anglican liturgy onto a thoroughly Bengali setting.
