The largest science centre in the subcontinent, genuinely well-conceived and worth serious engagement from adults, not just families. Opened 1 July 1997, run by the National Council of Science Museums.
Evolution Park: life-sized animated/robotic prehistoric creatures along an outdoor route, aimed at a general audience but memorable in scale.
Space Odyssey: a full-dome 3D Space Theatre (25-30 min), the Time Machine motion-simulator, a second 3D theatre and a mirror-based exhibit; book ahead, as sessions fill.
Maritime Centre: a ship-shaped building on seafaring history, developed with the Kolkata Port Trust.
Dynamotion Hall: genuinely interactive science demonstrations, an aquarium and a butterfly enclave, the complex’s most popular section with children.
Science on a Sphere: a NOAA global projection system on a suspended 1.8m screen, with shows running about 30 minutes for groups up to 70.
The outdoor Science Park (pendulums, gear systems, a cable car, road train, gravity coaster, butterfly nursery) is best visited in cooler months. Plan a minimum three hours; a full day isn’t excessive.
