Salt Lake (Bidhannagar)

Built in phases from the early 1960s on reclaimed marshland, Salt Lake was the state’s answer to housing a growing professional class without replicating the old city’s organic density. The answer was a grid: numbered sectors (I-V and additional blocks) of residential plots, parks, schools and markets arranged with mathematical regularity: comfortable, liveable and, to a visitor from Kumartuli or the ghats, entirely disorienting in its placidity.
Highlights: Salt Lake Stadium; Central Park, a large, well-maintained park with a boating lake, renamed Boi Mela Prangan in 2022 and home each winter to the Kolkata Book Fair; the quieter Banabitan forest park nearby, rarely visited; and the Sector V IT hub, whose concentration of young professionals and contemporary cafés gives it an energy distinct from both the old city and New Town’s corporate register.
