Founded in 1938 as part of the Ramakrishna Mission, this institute runs a public library, an art gallery notable for its Bengal School paintings and an active lecture and performance programme. The Bengal School, led by Abanindranath Tagore and E.B. Havell, blending Mughal, Rajput, Japanese and Ajanta influences, is one of the better places in Kolkata to encounter this tradition outside the Indian Museum.
