New Town (Rajarhat)

New Town is what happens when a government builds a city from scratch with a 21st-century brief: 30.8 km² developed so far of a planned 60.4 km². Its in-betweenness (construction beside finished districts, towers next to empty plots) is part of its character.
It’s divided into three Action Areas. Area I, the most developed, holds City Centre New Town mall and the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre (opened 2017). Area II holds Eco Park and, on its boundary, the Biswa Bangla Gate at the Narkelbagan crossing. Area III is newest and largely under construction, home to the emerging Bengal Silicon Valley Hub, built on the same eastern flatland the bheries occupy.
Architecture ranges from generic glass towers to genuine landmarks: the Biswa Bangla Gate, combining Bengali craft motifs with steel-and-glass design, is the most discussed recent addition to Kolkata’s built environment. The New Town Art Walk, a string of commissioned public art along the main pedestrian spine, represents a rare serious investment in public art for an Indian planned township.
New Town is a designated Solar City and Smart Green City, named India's best smart city in 2023. Ten and a half kilometres of the Major Arterial Road carry free public Wi-Fi (billed as India’s first Wi-Fi road) alongside solar road studs, IoT vertical gardens on metro pillars, a canal-top solar plant near Eco Park and a mobility programme promising 195 km of pedestrian paths. Vertical gardens already climb the pillars of a metro line yet to carry a train: New Town in one image.
For visitors from the rest of the guide, New Town feels more like Gurugram or Hyderabad’s HITEC City than any version of Kolkata previously encountered: wide streets, new buildings, pan-Indian restaurants, familiar mall brands. This isn’t a failure but the deliberate product of a brief aimed at corporate investment and a professional class with means to choose, and it has largely succeeded on its own terms.
