This was the Bose family’s Calcutta residence and the site of Subhas Chandra Bose’s audacious escape on the night of 16-17 January 1941: disguised as a Pathan insurance agent, he was driven from here to Gomoh station, then travelled overland through Afghanistan to Germany via the Soviet Union, the beginning of the journey that led to the Indian National Army and the still-contested circumstances of his 1945 death.
Maintained by the Netaji Research Bureau, the museum holds Bose’s correspondence with Gandhi and Nehru, INA documents, personal effects and the Wanderer W24 car that drove him out that January night, the single object here that most concentrates the moment into something tangible.
