Where AJC Bose Road meets Cathedral Road, four major cultural institutions cluster closely enough to share crowds and, on busy evenings, a kind of collective electricity. It functions less as a neighbourhood than as a campus.
The anchor is Nandan, the film complex Ray helped design, inaugurated in 1985 and now home to the November Kolkata International Film Festival; its year-round programme of Bengali, Indian and international art-house cinema plays to attentive audiences at nominal prices. Attached is Rabindra Sadan, South Kolkata’s principal auditorium for classical music, theatre and dance, and headquarters for the May Rabindra Jayanti celebrations.
Across the junction stands the Academy of Fine Arts (1933), Kolkata’s oldest continuously operating fine arts institution, known as much for rotating temporary shows as its permanent Tagore-family and Bengali modern art holdings. Nearby, Sisir Mancha is the primary stage for contemporary Bengali theatre, worth attending even without the language.
The proximity is the point: a festival screening, a dance recital, an art exhibition and a play can all be underway within a few minutes’ walk on the same night.
