Kolkata’s largest mosque, built 1926-1942 by the Kutchi Memon merchant community, draws on Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra and the gateways of Fatehpur Sikri, adapted to the Bengali climate with deep-shaded verandahs and a courtyard holding 10,000 worshippers for Friday prayers. It’s surrounded by the lanes of Zakaria Street, the commercial and social heart of the city’s Muslim community, at their most cinematically beautiful during Ramadan and Eid. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times with covered heads and shoes removed.
