Address: Strand Road at Hare Street
Timing: Tue-Sun 10am-5pm
A striking Hellenic-revival building (1840-44) modelled on the Tower of the Winds in Athens, funded by public subscription to honour Sir Charles Metcalfe. It originally housed the Calcutta Public Library, later renamed the Imperial Library and eventually evolved into the National Library of India. Restored around 2018, it now holds a small permanent exhibition on the city's history, worth twenty minutes if already crossing B.B.D. Bagh.
