Mandarmani, Purba Medinipur

By admin, 20 March, 2026

If Digha is the loud, boisterous cousin, Mandarmani is the quiet, sophisticated sibling. Known for boasting the longest motorable beach in India, this sleepy fishing village turned beach resort in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district offers a rare luxury: space. Here, you don't fight for a spot on the sand; you drive until you find your own. It is a place to slow down, eat fresh crab curry by the kilo, and watch the sun dip into the horizon without a skyscraper in sight.

Getting There

From Kolkata
By Car: The most popular option. Take the Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge), follow the Kona Expressway and join NH16 toward Kolaghat/Nandakumar, then cut toward Contai and the Mandarmani approach (locals will often point you via Chawalkhola). Distance is roughly 180–183 km, and 3.5–5 hours is a fair expectation depending on traffic.
By Bus: Government and private buses run from Esplanade and Babughat in Kolkata. Journey takes 4-5 hours. Book tickets through West Bengal Transport Corporation or private operators.
By Train: There’s no station at Mandarmani itself. The closest convenient railhead is usually Kanthi/Contai, followed by a short road transfer. Digha is another popular option (with plenty of tourist traffic), but it’s farther, so plan for a longer taxi/auto ride onward to Mandarmani.
Nearest Airport: Kolkata (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport), approximately 170km away.

Getting Around

Mandarmani is small enough to explore on foot along the beach road. For longer distances or trips to nearby beaches:
Auto-rickshaws: Available for local trips
Bicycle rentals: Some hotels offer bikes
Motorcycle rentals: Available from shops near the main beach
Taxi: Can be arranged through hotels for day trips
Most visitors use their own vehicles, which provides maximum flexibility for beach driving and exploring the area.

What/Where to Eat

Mandarmani's culinary scene centres on fresh seafood, though you'll also find Bengali, Chinese, and standard Indian fare.
Seafood Shacks
Numerous beach-facing eateries line the main strip. Look for places with fresh catches displayed on ice. Must-tries include:
Pomfret fry: Local favourite, perfectly crispy
Prawn curry: Rich Bengali-style preparation
Crab masala: Messy but delicious
Fish tikka: Marinated and grilled
Lobster: When available, usually expensive
Most shacks price by weight. Expect to pay Rs. 400-800 for a meal for two with fish, rice, and sides.
Tip: Seafood is freshest from November to March.
Hotel Restaurants
Most resorts have in-house restaurants serving multi-cuisine menus. Quality varies, but generally reliable for Bengali thalis, North Indian dishes, and basic continental food. Breakfast buffets are common.

Best Time to Visit

High Season (October to March): Perfect weather with cool temperatures (15-25°C) and minimal rainfall. December and January can be quite pleasant, though nights get chilly. Book accommodations well in advance, especially for weekends and holidays like Durga Puja and New Year.
Shoulder Season (September and April): Still decent weather with fewer crowds. April can get warm but the sea breeze keeps it bearable.
Low Season (May to August): Monsoon season brings heavy rains and rough seas. Many hotels offer significant discounts, but beach activities are limited and swimming can be dangerous.
Best Time: November to February for ideal conditions.

If you have an extra half-day, Mandarmani also plays nicely with its neighbours. Tajpur and Shankarpur are easy coastal detours for a change of mood (and more long, quiet shoreline).
