One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sites marking where parts of the goddess Sati’s body fell to earth, Kalighat marks where her toes fell, giving it cosmic rather than merely local significance. The icon of Kali here is distinctive: a golden tongue, three eyes, a crown of serpents and four golden hands. Darshan takes 20-40 minutes on ordinary weekday mornings, two hours or more on Tuesdays and Saturdays and five or six hours during Kali Puja.
One theory derives “Calcutta” from “Kalikata,” itself named for Kalighat. Standing here places you at the origin of the city’s name.
Goat sacrifice is practised at a separate platform, an ancient element of Tantric worship that remains subject to internal and external debate; it can generally be avoided by staying in the main darshan queue. The temple is open to visitors of all religions; pandas (temple priests) will offer paid assistance, so agree to a price only if you want the service. The surrounding lanes, with their flower markets and the atmospheric Adi Ganga ghat, reward unhurried exploration.
