Gariahat

Gariahat is where South Kolkata sheds its residential composure for democratic commerce. At the crossing where Rashbehari Avenue meets Gariahat Road sits one of the city’s most concentrated market environments: formal shops, semi-formal pavement stalls and a shifting street market layered on top of each other and spilling into every side lane.
The street market deals in clothing, fabric, accessories and domestic goods at prices reflecting local rather than tourist purchasing power, making it the right place for tant cotton saris, kantha embroidery, and block-printed kurtas at a fraction of New Market or Park Street prices.
Lake Market, a few minutes toward Rabindra Sarobar, is a smaller food market, selling fresh produce, fish and spices, with an early-morning fish section that is one of South Kolkata's most visually extraordinary commercial scenes.
Dakshinapan, a government-run shopping complex at the Dhakuria bridge, houses emporiums from West Bengal alongside Rajasthan, Orissa, Kashmir and a dozen other states at fixed prices, making it the most efficient single stop to survey Indian craft traditions.
Priya Cinema on Rashbehari Avenue, functioning since the 1960s, is one of Kolkata’s last beloved single-screen cinemas; its unselfconscious local audience is as much the experience as the film.
