The wetlands have no ticket booth, no interpretive centre, no signposted path. Visiting properly means either booking a guided half-day walk or having the self-sufficiency to navigate the embankments alone. A good guide is the difference between seeing flat water and fields, and understanding the system: one of the most intellectually extraordinary landscapes in Kolkata.
A typical guided walk covers 3-5km of embankment before 8am, explaining the sewage-treatment cycle, aquaculture practices and vegetable cultivation, while you encounter farming families at their morning work.
Birdlife: over 175 resident and migratory species, among the most significant birding sites in West Bengal, exceeding South Kolkata’s Rabindra Sarobar in diversity and numbers. Winter (November-February) brings migratory waterfowl (lesser whistling duck, northern pintail, gadwall, common pochard); year-round residents include spot-billed pelican, painted stork and several kingfisher species. Bring binoculars and a 300mm lens.
