This UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway, affectionately called the “toy train,” has chugged through the mountains since 1881. The two-hour ride between Darjeeling and Ghum offers spectacular views and photo opportunities. The most popular option is the 2-hour "Joyride," which runs from Darjeeling to Ghoom (India's highest railway station) and back. Pulled by a vintage steam engine, it chugs through the town, past markets and stops for 10 minutes at the Batasia Loop.
Note: Book tickets in advance during peak season. Timetables change, so treat all times as service-dependent. IRCTC’s DHR page gives the timetable.
