Opened 2019, the Gate is the most architecturally discussed addition to Kolkata’s built landscape in a decade: a steel-and-glass structure drawing on Bengali craft motifs, celebrated by some as bold cultural assertion, criticised by others as overwrought. At roughly 55m it's visible from most of Action Area I, so seeking it out specifically is rarely necessary. It houses a suspended glass viewing gallery and a hanging restaurant (Café Ekante; Indian, Chinese, continental buffet around Rs 500 plus tax, food sent up by service lift).
Nearby, the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre (2017) anchors newer hotels and restaurants; Rabindra Tirtha and Nazrul Tirtha, New Town’s cultural venues, sit in the same area and go largely unvisited by non-residents.
The New Town Art Walk, commissioned public art along a 3km pedestrian spine through Action Area II, is more consistently successful, with several compelling site-specific pieces engaging the new city's half-built quality. The full walk takes about 45 minutes.
