Adjacent to Kumartuli and sharing its riverfront character, Baghbazar is quieter but no less rewarding. Its spiritual anchor is the Baghbazar Sarbojonin Durga Puja, one of the oldest and most prestigious community celebrations in Kolkata, held unbroken since 1919; the final-evening immersion procession to the Hooghly is one of the most emotionally overwhelming spectacles North Kolkata produces. The Baghbazar Ghat is worth a dawn visit, a working ghat where morning ablutions and flower offerings are simply the neighbourhood’s spiritual life in motion.
The residential lanes behind the ghat hold some of the least-visited heritage mansions in the district. Chief among them: the Gaudiya Math, headquarters of the mission carrying forward Sri Chaitanya’s teachings; the ancestral house of playwright Girish Chandra Ghosh, visited by Sri Ramakrishna himself; and the mansion of Gobindaram Mitra, at the junction of Rabindra Sarani and Madan Mohan Tala Street, remembered as the first Bengali to drive a coach.
