Established in 1937, India's first university-housed public museum, named for Vice-Chancellor Ashutosh Mukherjee. The ground floor holds eastern Indian sculpture and terracotta; upstairs, Bengali and Orissan folk art, textiles and paintings spanning the 14th to 19th centuries, including Kalighat works, Nepalese art and Tibetan thangkas.
Adda Culture: Adda is the Bengali tradition of extended, purposeless, pleasurably unproductive conversation: unscheduled, uncurated, happening wherever Kolkatans sit down together without an agenda, at Coffee House, at a tea stall, at an evening neighbourhood gathering. The correct relationship to it as a visitor is not to observe but to be absorbed: if you sit at a tea stall long enough, someone will address you, and when they do, don’t manage the conversation. Bengali intellectual culture is omnivorous: politics, cricket, poetry, a municipal failure, a film, the merit of different mishti doi producers, all equally valid. Follow where it goes.
