Alipore Zoological Gardens

Opened in 1876, this is India’s oldest formally established zoo. The 45 acres of old-growth grounds are among Kolkata’s most beautiful; the tiger enclosures are large and well-kept; the tortoise enclosure recalls Adwaita, the giant Aldabra tortoise who died here in 2006 at a reputed 255 years old. Bird aviaries and the reptile house are strong.
