Adjacent ghats below Sovabazar and Jorabagan, both funded by Rani Rashmoni (who also built Babughat and, later, Dakshineswar). Ahiritola is a working ghat shared by ferries, fishing boats and morning bathers, built in irregular terraces rather than formal steps. Nimtala, immediately north, is Kolkata’s best-known cremation ghat; the sight of pyres from Ahiritola’s steps is, in Hindu sacred geography, theologically precise rather than morbid: the Ganga receives both the living and the dead. This is an active site of mourning: do not photograph cremations or grieving families and be prepared to simply move on if the atmosphere doesn’t feel right.
