Founded in 1933 by art patron Lady Ranu Mukherjee, the Academy holds one of India’s more important collections of 20th-century Indian art, a useful counterpoint to the Victoria Memorial’s largely European view of Bengal. Its centrepiece, the Rabindra Gallery, holds paintings and manuscripts of Rabindranath Tagore, whose visual art is far less known internationally than his writing. Adjoining galleries cover the Bengal School painters working to forge an Indian modernism and Jamini Roy, who fused folk idiom with modernist line.
