The Watchtower & Sunrise

The village watchtower, a short walk uphill from the upper homestays, stands at nearly 7,800 feet and is the centrepiece of any visit. The 360-degree panorama takes in the snowfields of Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Kabru, Rathong and the full eastern Himalayan chain to the north; the green folds of the Dooars plains far below to the south; and the ridgelines of Kalimpong district and parts of Sikkim to the east. On exceptionally clear days, the hills of Nepal are visible to the west.
The pre-dawn trek to the tower for sunrise is the village's signature experience. Set an alarm for 4:30am, dress in every layer you own, and allow 15-20 minutes of uphill walking. The sky turns amber, then rose, then gold as the first light catches the glaciers, a spectacle that many travellers rank among the finest sunrise views in the Darjeeling hills, superior even to the famous Tiger Hill for its unobstructed sightlines.
