The great steel bridge that links Dakshineswar to Bally and Howrah on the western bank was completed in 1932 and remains one of the more dramatic entry points into the belt. Also known as the Bally Bridge or Willingdon Bridge, this 2,887-foot multispan structure was engineered to provide a vital dual-purpose road and rail link across the Hooghly River. From the river, particularly from the ferry, the bridge provides the compositional anchor for the best views of the Kali Temple complex. Its arches frame the navaratna towers with the precision of an old engraving.
