One of the genuinely rewarding activities at Gadiara is simply walking: into the village proper (away from the embankment toward the paddy fields and homesteads), along the Rupnarayan bank toward Mayachar and beyond, or on the narrow paths between fish ponds and kitchen gardens that make up the agricultural landscape behind the tourist zone. In winter, mustard fields bloom in brilliant yellow within a few minutes’ walk of the lodge. Early morning walks encounter the village at its most active: fishermen returning from night work, women carrying water, children heading to school, the smell of wood smoke and river mud and chai. These walks are free, require nothing but curiosity and are among the most genuinely pleasurable things Gadiara has to offer.
