Vidyasagar Smriti Mandir

A few minutes' walk from the school stands the Vidyasagar Smriti Mandir, a large cultural hall built in memory of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the philosopher-reformer who championed widow remarriage, women's education and the rewriting of Bengali prose. Its foundation stone was laid in 1938 by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and the opening ceremony was presided over by Rabindranath Tagore himself in December 1939. The hall subsequently became a stage for the political upheavals of the independence movement and later of West Bengal's turbulent politics. It remains a functioning venue today; the building is listed by the West Bengal Heritage Commission.
