Just north of Azimganj, the village of Baranagar (also Boronagar) boasts stunning 18th-century Bengali terracotta temples:
Char Bangla Temple Complex: Four temples in the do-chala (two-roofed) or Bangla architectural style, built by Rani Bhabani of Natore. Two temples feature intricate terracotta ornamentation on outer walls.
Gangeshwar Temple:
Jor Bangla (twin-hut) style with rich terracotta work.
Bhabaniswar Temple: An octagonal temple built by Tarasundari (Rani Bhabani's daughter) in 1755, featuring beautiful stucco work.
Panchamukhi Shiva Temple:
The lingam inside has five faces, hence the name.
These temples represent Bengal's distinctive terracotta temple tradition, quite different from the Jain architecture across the river.
A quick reality-check, too: Baranagar’s fame was always in conversation with the Bhagirathi’s moods. The river has eaten its share of shrines over the centuries, which makes the survivors feel less like a neat “complex” and more like a handful of stubborn miracles.
