Built in 1985 by Jessop for irrigation, the Test Barrage remains an impressive feat of engineering. To the north, the river widens into a vast, lake-like reservoir; to the south, it narrows and rushes through the sluice gates. The contrast creates a striking interplay between engineered control and natural force.
The reservoir is now the site’s main attraction. You can walk along the barrage itself for sweeping panoramic views, but the real magic unfolds along the water’s edges, where birdlife gathers in remarkable numbers.
