A steep, boulder-lined path climbs from the market area to a flight of stone stairs, which deposits you at this quietly compelling Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The monastery is active and not primarily a tourist attraction, so visit respectfully: remove your footwear, move clockwise and avoid interrupting prayers. The row of prayer wheels along the outer wall deserves a slow circuit. A lama is said to have meditated at this site for seventeen years, and there's an aura of deep stillness that the surrounding forested hillside reinforces.
