Shah Alam’s Dargah

An early 18th-century Islamic architectural structure of archaeological interest, built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan during his tenure as Subedar of Bengal (1717-1727). Nawab Murshid Quli Khan was the first Nawab of Bengal proper and was responsible for shifting the provincial capital to Murshidabad; Katwa’s chowki was part of his administrative network. The dargah (shrine) is a well-proportioned building in the Bengal Sultanate tradition, modestly maintained and notable as a surviving physical remnant of the Nawabi-period Katwa. The dargah is an ASI-listed building of archaeological interest.
