Serampore College is the town’s grand neoclassical landmark and the most enduring legacy of the “Serampore Trio.” Founded in 1818, it received its Danish Royal Charter on 23 February 1827, granting degree-awarding privileges in arts and theology, an unexpectedly Danish twist in Indian higher-education history. Today, theological degrees are conferred through the Senate of Serampore College (University), while the college’s general streams are affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Even if you can’t access every interior, the sweeping columned façade is worth the detour. Inside the library, the Carey Library & Research Institute includes the Carey Museum and archives, with memorabilia linked to Carey (including his desk).
