Every evening at dusk, a Sandhya Arati (evening prayer ceremony) is performed on the riverside near the barrage. Similar to the larger, well-known ceremonies on the Ganges at Varanasi and Rishikesh, a more intimate ritual takes place on the Damodar River. This ceremony involves lighting oil lamps, burning incense, and offering prayers. The ceremony draws local devotees and a scattering of curious visitors, and the sight of flickering diyas on the darkening water makes for a genuinely moving experience. The exact timing shifts with the season; arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to be sure of a spot.
