Sabang is the premier hub of madur mat weaving in Paschim Medinipur. For centuries, the local Mahishya-caste communities have cultivated and woven madurkathi, a sedge grass native to Bengal’s marshy alluvial lowlands. A visit to a weaving household reveals a timeless rhythm: women sitting by their floor looms, their hands moving with the steady, unconscious grace of generational muscle memory, conversing effortlessly across adjacent courtyards.
The craft dates back to the medieval period under Mughal patronage. The finest mats, known as masland (derived from the Persian masnad, meaning throne), were woven with silk or fine cotton warp and collected as tax from local jagirdars as early as 1744. Today, an estimated 60,000 weavers (93% of whom are women) keep the tradition alive across the Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts. The craft was awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2018, offering crucial protection against cheap synthetic alternatives. Master weavers from Sabang, such as Gauri Rani Jana and Gauri Bala Das, are recipients of National Handicraft Awards.
The Three Grades of Mats
Ekh-rokha: The simplest and lightest grade. It is woven on a bamboo-frame loom using a single madurkathi reed as the weft.
Do-rokha: A heavier, much more durable mat created by weaving with a double reed.
Masland: The finest, most prestigious grade. Crafting a masland mat requires superior-grade madurkathi, at least two weavers working in perfect synchrony and years of honed precision. They feature intricate, naturally dyed (black and red-maroon) patterns such as the honeycomb (mouchak), rhombus (barfi) and cascading (hama) designs.
While the rhythmic courtyard weaving remains fundamentally unchanged, contemporary Sabang weavers have successfully evolved their output for the modern era. Today, the same intricate techniques used for traditional floor mats are applied to bags, coasters, table runners, wall hangings and accessories, allowing this ancient craft to travel to urban design stores and craft fairs worldwide.
