The River at Night

Diamond Harbour is one of the few places near Kolkata where the night riverscape is worth staying up for. The promenade is lit, the water carries the running lights of vessels making the upriver passage to Kolkata, and the entire scene has an atmosphere that is equal parts commercial and poetic. Walk along the waterfront after dinner, buy a cup of chai from the stalls on the opposite side of the road, and watch the lights move on the black water. This is, for many visitors, the most vivid memory they take home.
