Text Body

At the edge of the village is Dontapukur, the pond where, according to local tradition, Rami the washerwoman came each day to wash clothes and where Chandidas, smitten, would come to fish and catch glimpses of her. A wooden plank traditionally associated with Rami is preserved nearby. The annual Chandidas Mela (see Festivals section) is held on the banks of this pond on Dol Purnima, in memory of Chandidas and Rami's love story.
Even outside festival time, the pond has a gentle, melancholy beauty: lotus pads on the still water, herons in the reeds, the distant sound of a radio playing kirtan from a roadside tea stall. It is the kind of place that stays with you.
