Entry & Hours: The Palashi Monument is an open site with no formal entry gate or admission charge. You can visit at any hour, though the site is best seen in daylight. There are no fixed opening or closing times for the grounds.
The centrepiece of the site is a tall stone obelisk that was erected in 1857, exactly 100 years after the battle, to mark Clive's former hunting lodge command post on the east bank of the Bhagirathi. The monument bears the inscription “Battle Field of Plassey June 23rd 1757” and stands amid mango orchards near the locality known as Panighata. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Structurally imposing in its blunt colonial confidence, the obelisk has, over the decades, attracted a rather conflicted heritage: a monument built by the victors on the site of a betrayal. Give yourself time to circle it slowly and read the inscriptions.
