Mayachar: The River Sandbank

A short distance along the Rupnarayan bank from the main Gadiara embankment lies Mayachar: a sprawling sandbank on the Rupnarayan River that emerges most dramatically during the post-monsoon dry season (October-March). Mayachar is used by locals for picnics and languid afternoons sitting on the sand, and offers a secluded riverside beach experience of the kind that is rare this close to Kolkata. The name itself evokes illusion (maya): the sandbank shifts seasonally and is never exactly the same place twice.
