Much of the battle was fought in and around mango groves, which in 1757 covered the east bank extensively. Significant groves still stand around the monument today, particularly between the obelisk and the river. In summer, the canopy is thick and provides welcome shade. In March and April, raw green mangoes appear on the branches. Local vendors sell cut mango with chilli and salt outside the site entrance: a small, sharp pleasure that links the modern visitor to the landscape's deepest continuity.
