Head south along GT Road to Mahesh, a historic Serampore locality anchored by the Jagannath temple and one of Bengal’s most storied Rath Yatra neighbourhoods. The festival tradition is widely dated to 1396, while the present temple structure is commonly dated to 1755, so the devotion is medieval even if much of the built fabric is later. The famous rath is the real jaw-dropper: the current towering iron chariot, a four-storey, roughly 50-foot, navaratna-style structure, was built in 1885 (by Martin Burn), and the festival often draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands. Tip: On festival days, expect serious crowds; go early, keep valuables zipped, and follow the local flow.
Darshan timings commonly listed as 6am-12pm and 4pm-9pm.
