Mahanad Kali Mandir

About 8 km from Itachuna, the centuries-old Mahanad Kali temple is a significant Shakti pilgrimage site. Local tradition holds that Rani Rashmoni visited this temple and was so inspired that she went on to build the Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata. Mahanad was a prominent centre of the Shiva-Shakti sect during the Pala dynasty era (9th-10th century CE) and archaeological excavations have uncovered coins and artefacts from the Kushan and Gupta periods.
