One of Barrackpore's more poignant sights is the crumbling hulk of the Lalkuthi Fire Station, a once-magnificent building that local historians believe served as a zamindari (estate-holder’s) house belonging to Rani Rashmoni and her family. The building now stands in advanced ruin, its red-brick walls still bearing traces of ornamental detailing and its roof long gone. It is not officially open to visitors, but the exterior can be viewed from the road and presents a compelling image of the layers of history that Barrackpore carries: the philanthropist, the empire and the slow reclamation of all things by time.
