Lady Charlotte Canning, wife of Lord Canning (India's first Viceroy and Governor-General after the 1857 Mutiny), died in Barrackpore in 1861: a beloved figure renowned for her watercolours of India, some 350 works, now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, produced during four major tours of the country. Her tomb, set in a quiet garden within the cantonment, has long been a place of historical pilgrimage. A statue of Lord Canning himself, the Viceroy who oversaw the transition from Company to Crown rule, also stands in the area. Both sites are within the cantonment and typically require prior arrangement to visit.
