The town of Khardah, a short distance north of Barrackpore, is an important Vaishnava pilgrimage centre directly associated with Sri Nityananda Mahaprabhu, the close companion of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Kunjabati, now declared a heritage site by the West Bengal Heritage Commission (2018), was the residential compound of Nityananda himself. The adjacent temples of Shyamsundar Jiu (established by Birbhadra Goswami, Nityananda's divine son) and Madan Mohan Jiu are among the most significant Vaishnava temples in Bengal. The octave-metal idol of Madan Mohan, housed in an atchala-style temple that faces west, is particularly revered. The complex is lively during festivals such as Janmashtami, Dol Yatra and Jhulan.
