The spiritual heart of Gangasagar. The current temple (bright, colourful and modern) is dedicated to Sage Kapil Muni, venerated as an incarnation of Vishnu and the progenitor of the Samkhya school of Hindu philosophy. Inside the main sanctum stand statues of Kapil Muni flanked by the Ganga Devi and King Sagara; an idol of the sacrificial horse that was at the centre of the legendary misunderstanding is also present. The temple is administered by Ramanandi sadhus from Ayodhya. Aarti (lamp ceremony) at dawn and dusk is the most atmospheric time to visit: the priests sing hymns, incense rises and the proximity of the sea provides a constant undercurrent of sound. The temple and its surrounding ashram compound are open year-round; during the Ganga Sagar Festival in January, the crowds are immense. Outside the mela, the atmosphere is peaceful, devotional and deeply welcoming.
