The centrepiece of any Mukutmanipur visit, this massive earthen barrage stretches approximately 11 km and ranks as India's second-longest earthen dam by crest length, surpassed only by the Sri Ram Sagar Project in Telangana. Traversing the crown of the dam on the paved road reveals some of Bengal’s most breathtaking panoramas, with a sprawling expanse of blue water on one side and a lush, thick forest on the other.

The experience changes dramatically with the time of day. At dawn, mist clings to the water and the hillocks appear to float above the reservoir like islands in a dream. At sunset, the sky puts on an extravagant display of oranges and purples that reflects perfectly off the still water. A drive or auto-rickshaw ride across the dam in the late afternoon is simply unmissable.
Along the dam road you’ll also find a small museum showcasing local arts and crafts, a children’s park, and several rest stops with benches overlooking the water.
