Twenty kilometres from Asansol on the banks of the Barakar River sits one of West Bengal's most revered Shakti shrines. Kalyaneshwari is a 500-year-old centre of Shakti worship, though the present temple structure was built by the Panchakot Raj.

The Legend: The name “Maithon” derives from “Mai Ka Sthan” (mother's abode) in honor of this temple. Multiple legends surround its origin, including beliefs that it marks where a body part of Goddess Parvati fell. The temple is believed to fulfill the wishes of childless women, drawing devotees from across India.

What to See: The main deity resides in a cave within the temple, with an Ashtadhatu (eight-metal) Kali idol worshipped outside. Simple yet powerful architecture in Bengal-Oriya style. A small stream flows behind the temple through granite terrain, adding to the serenity. Traditional animal sacrifice customs continue during special occasions.
