Beyond the pilgrimage complex, Sagar Island's more than 40 villages offer a genuinely peaceful rural delta experience rarely visited by travellers. Coconut palms line the roads; paddy fields open out between villages; fishing boats are pulled up on creek banks. The island is entirely flat, only 4 metres above sea level on average, and this low horizon amplifies the sky in a way that is deeply particular to the Bengal delta. A toto or hired vehicle will take you through the interior; alternatively, the roads are good enough for cycling (no bicycle rental exists, bring your own if possible). Look for the small earthen temples at village edges, the fishing communities along the creek ghats and the extraordinary bird life of the paddy-field margins at dawn.
