Beyond its function as a transport hub, this Gothic-style building from 1905 is architecturally impressive. The chaos inside is quintessentially Indian: observe the perpetual motion of passengers, porters balancing impossible loads, and chai wallahs serving tea in clay cups. As the oldest station serving Kolkata (started in 1854), it is one of India's busiest railway stations and the largest railway complex. The route between Howrah-Hooghly was the second passenger train route in India after Bombay-Thane.
