Hours: Generally 6am-5pm; Deer Park may have separate hours
Golapbag, literally the Rose Garden, was established by Maharaja Bijoy Chand Mahatab in 1884 as a botanical and zoological garden. Today it is a beautifully shaded park attached to the Bardhaman University’s agricultural campus. The Deer Park within its grounds is a compact wildlife sanctuary housing spotted deer, a small number of birds and (historically) big cats, though current conditions should be verified on arrival. The grave of Bijoy Chand Mahatab, known as Bijoybahar, sits at the far end of the reserve forest.
Golapbag is a wonderful morning option: the light filters through mature trees, the air smells of damp earth and the university’s botanical collections provide interest for those with a horticultural eye. It is far less crowded than Krishnasayar and has a genuine parkland character.
